Survival Spirituality

Episode 54: Season 2 ep. 19

The Without Land plot thickens when Erika runs into Pastor Byron outside of her home. They discuss the choices the family is facing and how God is guiding them. Here to talk with us today about our Spiritual Survival in long term survival situations is Pastor Bill Jenkins, author of The New Prophetic Almanac for 2016.

Lessons from Pastor Bill

"True integrity comes from what's inside your house. If you can't be a good spouse and parent and invest your time properly there, how can you advice others?"

Isn't it interesting how people will turn to God in times of extreme crisis, when they haven't been practicing their faith at all before that? I asked Pastor Bill why he felt people do this. He explained that people often take their relationship with God for granted and our faith is put on the back burner without realizing what really matters in life. Problems will cause people to turn back to their faith and re-examine their relationship with God. Pastor Bill explains the need to keep God in the forefront of our mind all the time, explaining that there are many benefits to building a permanent relationship with the Lord in good and bad times alike. You can use this relationship to go into the world and do good things for others, making them glad you are around. You can change their day for the better. Pastor
Bill uses his competitive background in sports and explains that instead of just paying things forward you can look to pay it forward a little bit more than what was done for you. Emphasize the importance of those little things in your life. Be there today, don't promise to be there tomorrow.

God never leaves you. Sometimes friends will come in and out of your life and this can leave you feeling a sense of abandonment but God is always there for you. It is not always easy to live a good life and sometimes your loved ones will not support your choice to walk with God. But if you can keep the Lord in your heart, this love can help you accelerate issues by learning lessons quicker. With God you can reach a point of acceptance quicker because you will be looking for the approval of God not the approval of man.  Make an effort to get the best of every situation, your attitude will make the light happen all around you. If you have a good attitude you will have a high altitude but a bad attitude will result in a low altitude. Without God in our hearts we learn to deal with situations and feeling not heal from these situations. God can help to heal you so you can accept life and not be controlled by the opinions of others.

There are risks to having faith in the Lord. Salvation may be free but it's not cheap and it may cost you your life. Religious persecution happens everyday and many die for their love of God. When you make the decision to keep God in your heart not everyone will be happy with you and sometimes you have to let go of the past. Don't allow this past to dictate your future! Reach out, aim high and go for your future, strong in your faith in the Lord. You can't just hope for change, you have to make change happen.

There are also many benefits of being part of the God community. You will have a fellowship of people and support. These people can be strong for you when you are weak and you in turn can be strong for them in their times of weakness. As human beings, we are designed to connect and when you don't connect you will have less satisfaction in your life. However we must remember, Jesus had twelve disciples, three friends and one best friend. Sometimes you will not find lots of quality friends. A couple of people that you can really depend on is all you need.

Survival Sex

Episode 53: Season 2 ep. 18

In today's chapter of Without Land, Erika and Vince head home after their meeting with Sergeant Bennet. Vince and Erika have a hiccup in their relationship because of the miscommunication and stressful circumstances. They find a way to make it up to one another. Here to talk to us today about the benefits of survival sex is Raine Leigh, author of Squirting, It's Easier Than You Think: A Holistic Guide to Female Pleasure.

Lessons from Raine

Sometimes sexual astigmatisms keep us from discussing such topics as sex during survival situations but as a healthy part of life such circumstances are bound to come up. There are parts of this aspect of life that must be prepped for as well.

Long term periods of increased anxiety or depression may decrease sexual libido because this increased anxiety causes our bodies operate in permanent fight or flight mode. Stress can effect female and male bodies a like. Pregnant women will sometimes have a difficult time keeping a baby full term and may not ovulate regularly. Male bodies can sometimes have problems with erectile dysfunction.

However, disaster situations can sometimes cause an increased libido as well. After 9/11 there was an increase in sexual activities evident by an increase in birth rates nine months later. This is called "End of the World sex." During these times people use sexual relations to cope with fear and vulnerability. Biologically, our bodies tell us we should procreate to ensure the continuance of the human race. During time of war we also see and increase in birth rates of soldiers who are biologically urged to form relationships and procreate because they may not have a chance to again. These individuals headed to war are also more likely to sexually communicate and experiment with their partners.

With all this increased libido, birth control will be of the utmost importance. As a survivalist/prepper preparing for the worst, you should have a large supply of condoms, if you are still able to procreate. However whatever modern birth control method you choose to stock, in a long term survival situation, eventually these things will run out. The most effective method of birth control at this point is one that has been used by the Catholic religion for centuries. A woman can monitor her cycles and recognize when she is fertile or not. Most women can tell by cervical mucus and signs in her body during ovulation. Currently there are books and apps to help a woman learn how to monitor her cycle. It is a good idea to learn how to do this before you are reliant upon this method. If you do not plan on having any more children, in my opinion, it is a good idea to make sure that you or your partner is no longer fertile to ensure there are no unexpected surprises.

There are some very big emotional and physical benefits of engaging in sexual activity. Sex will help both people involved reduce anxiety and stress. Heart health is improved during sexual activity because it increases heart rate and blood flow (your exercising!). Sex reduces the chances of cancer in both men and women by properly stimulating key areas of your body. Sleep is improved, blood pressure is lowered, and pain is relieved by engaging in sexual intercourse. Most of these effects happen because during sex our bodies release good brain chemicals like serotonin and oxytosis.

It is not necessary to have a partner during orgasm to experience these effects but sex helps to bond partners together and creates trust. All of these positive effects occur in both people's brains, making both individuals happier and aids with keeping relationships together.

Society sometimes focuses on the pleasure of the male while overlooking female pleasure. Here are some tips for ladies to experience better sexual experiences. Don't give up on yourself! Communicate your needs to your partner. Most men want their women to be sexually pleasured and take pride in this accomplishment. They will want to help you have a better experience. Try tauntra, yoga, or meditation to help teach you to be more mindful and focused. This will help you stay in the present during sexual encounters. Start outside of the bedroom. Sometimes sexual experiences are heightened with long periods of foreplay. How are you talking to your partner? How are you looking at your partner? Send a sexy text or make a naughty phone call to build up the suspense of the event. Be spontaneous and creative. Don't let sex become an obligation; try different positions and places. Don't let it get boring!

Communication may be the biggest factor to a healthy sexual relationship. You are responsible for any change you want. Women, who are generally more outspoken, are sometimes very tight lipped about what pleasures them. Women, you have to put yourself out there. Relax, communicate, and trust in your partner. Men, if you start the conversation first it can help a woman relax and open up. Men, you need to be patient and understanding with your women's sexual needs. She will appreciate very much that you care enough to want to pleasure her.

Raine and I also shared some great tips on what to do during a woman's menstrual cycles. I know that this is a concern of many women and I also know a lot of men who are prepping for women who may not be on the same survivalist page. There is a trend for women to free bleed but it is not one I suggest during a survival situation because of the lack of sanitation. Of course you should stock up on tampons and sanitary napkins. There are many other uses of these items besides those of a lady. If a lady is using cloth rags the rags should be boiled, bleached and left in the sunlight to destroy as many bacteria as possible. In the survivalist networks, women have also taken a liking to a Diva Cup. It is worth checking out to see if you would be comfortable with it.

Pros and Cons of Majority Decision Making

Episode 52: Season 2 ep.17

In today's chapter of Without Land, Erika is introduced to the rescue team's drill Sergeant, Sergeant Bennet, and the plans are laid out for their training, which will occur over the next three weeks. Erika's natural nuances seem to always land her in trouble but it also gives her the ability to stand apart and be confident. Here to talk to us today about the pros and cons of majority decision making and whether or not you should go with that decision is survival professional, George Hart.

Lessons about Majority Decisions from George

Before examining the pros and cons of complying with a majority, you must first determine if you agree with that majority or not. To do this you have to examine all of the knowledge and information available to you. This way you can develop a fact based personal opinion on the problem.

There are pros of blending in and going along with decisions made by the majority.  Often times when more people are involved in decisions the group will gain more information from many different points of view. This increase in diverse information allows the group to develop an increased number of alternative solutions to problems.

Applying this concept to your survival group, having weekly meetings to see how the group would proceed is a great idea. This keeps everyone on the same page and lets everyone feel like they have a voice in the group decisions. It also helps group members understand the rewards and consequences of the decisions they are participating in.

Another pro for majority decision making is that for most people a democratic input system is much more acceptable then a dictatorship. No amounts of information should be hidden from the group members. The individuals need to have the facts in order to make educated suggestions to solve group problems.

There are cons to majority decision making and just going along with whatever the group decides is right. The first and most obvious problem is when a majority feels one way and an individual doesn't it can leave that individual fearful of what other people are thinking about them and they may remain silent about their opinions. They won't want to speak out because of this social pressure. Losing the voice of these people is catastrophic because one idea can be a major game changer in any situation. If an idea is powerful enough to stand up to opposition it needs to be heard. The best decision may not always have the greatest number of voters but if one person decides to voice their opinion it may change everything.

The second major problem with majority decisions is if the group can't come to a general consensus they may chase their tails around trying to work with all the decisions at once. When this happens very little gets accomplished because each side is so so deeply pitted against the other, which brings us the the final major issue with majority decisions: They can set people against one another. Making sweeping rules for vast amounts of people often leaves groups unsatisfied and feeling cheated and voiceless. This leads to anger and hatred of one another. Smaller groups are often more successful at reaching an agreement and then one of the smaller group representatives can relay that decision to the larger group.

Personally, George says, don't be afraid to be a leader. Take ownership of your tribe while hearing them and understanding their issues. It will give you confidence, strength and allow your individuality and those of the individuals in your group to blossom. Work hard in your personal life so you can create admiration but never close your ears to the people who are there to help, even if the idea seems outrageous. In the end, think for yourself. Take the time to do your homework so you can understand issues that are important to you. Only then can you carry on a truly educated conversation about a topic that is backed up with facts and not beliefs.

Your Survival Depends on Your Boots

Episode 51: Season 2 ep.16

Erika is fitted into her new uniform in this chapter of Without Land. It has been nine years since she had a new pair of boots. Given our disposable society and access to affordable shoes it is not a product that most people give much thought. When you wear out one pair, you just go buy another but in a survival situation this might not be possible. Here to discuss the importance of our boots and feet and how we can extend the life of both is Massimo Marino, scientist and author of the Daimones Trilogy.

Lessons about your boots from Massimo

We often take our boots for granted and underestimate their necessity. Life in a time where your boots can easily be replaced if they develop a hole has taught us to be careless with their treatment. If the leather on your boots doesn't stay hydrated it can wrinkle and crack. This allows for moisture and dirt build-up, which quickens the disintegration process. Leather dehydration will also change the shape of your boot and the soles will begin to detach from the leather.

There are many things you can do to maintain the integrity of your boots. Clean them with mild temperature water. Remove the laces often and clean them. Allow the laces to dry and clean the areas of the boots where the laces run through. When your boots are wet let them dry in the air. Never allow your boots to dry by the fire. The rapid change in moisture level and temperature does horrible things to the leather.

When you are in a survival situation, take your boots off whenever you can and allow your boots and feet to air dry. This time in the air will prevent fungus and bacteria buildup in your boots and on your feet. You have to take care of your feet. Without your feet in premium condition and a pair of boots or quality foot coverings in optimal condition your chances of survival diminish rapidly. One of your number one priorities in a survival situation should be foot and foot wear care.

To help your boots survive longer you can use mink oil or animal fat as a treatment for them. Treating them with the oil will increase their waterproofing and keep the leather soft and smooth. Keeping the leather soft will also help maintain the shape of the boot.

If your boot gets a hole in the sole it can be a major problem. Most people are aware that duct tape can be applied to the exterior of the boot. The problem with an exterior duct tape application is it can make it difficult to get the boot on and off and more importantly it can decrease the traction of the boot. A broken leg or twisted ankle could be a life or death event in a survival situation. Instead of applying the patch to the exterior you should patch your boot from the interior. You can use paper and asphalt if available or the hide of an animal. In a long term survival situation you should always be on the lookout for a new pair of boots to scavenge even if you hold them in reserve for future use.

When you are on the lookout for a new pair of boots now-a-days, with a survival purpose in mind you should consider a few factors. Your feet need to breath. Leather is always best. You should be buying the boots for functionality not fashion. Lots of companies, for example: Timberline or Wolverine, offer affordable options that look great too. Remember comfort is always king! Whatever brand and style make your feet comfortable is the brand and style you should be wearing. If your feet are sore you are done!

Massimo Marino

I wrote fantastic stories and science fiction since I was a kid, short stories and novellas, but never had anyone read them. It was a personal thing: My father and my older brother received “Astounding Stories” and other Sci-Fi ‘zines, but I was too little to be allowed to read them, so I looked at the covers…and imagined things for myself. Then, work and life took their toll and I stopped writing those tales.

A few years ago, in 2011, for various reasons, I started again with some burning inside that needed to come out. On the first weekend I got over 15000 words, then subscribed to critters.org for peer review, lurked a year keeping on writing and getting feedback, and last September my debut novel, “Daimones“, saw the light. It received the 2012 PRG Reviewer’s Choice Award in Science Fiction. A debut novel among so many established authors in the competition.

In September 2013, “Daimones” won the 2013 Hall of Fame – Best Science Fiction from Quality Reads UK Book Club in collaboration with OrangeBerry Book Tours, shortlisted among thousands of other great candidates. I’m writing now Vol.3 of the Daimones Trilogy,  published the Vol.2 “Once Humans (Daimones Trilogy)” – 2014 Awarded in the Best Science Fiction category at the Readers’ Favorite Book Awards, and a small collection of short horrid stories, “Stranded Love. Vol.3 The Rise of the Phoenix (Daimones Trilogy) is available in digital and printed edition since May 2014.

So, what about me now… I’m Italian, and because even in Italy that means everything and nothing at all, I should say, I am Sicilian, and I was born in Palermo. As it happened with countless Sicilians before me, I left the region for good in 1986. I spent more years abroad than in my home country, and I have changed in many and different ways than my old friends there. It is always a pleasure to go back, but it is now 6 long years since my last visit. Saudade? Maybe, a little. I lived in Switzerland, France, and the United States.

I am a scientist, and have spent over 17 years in fundamental research. Most of my writing are then academic stuff, and I always wonder at how much Google is able to find about everyone. I am sure one has to Google oneself so not to forget too much…I worked for many years at CERN—an international lab for particle physics research near Geneva, Switzerland—then in the US at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. Fantastic moments and memories from those years. In 2005 I moved to the private sector, worked with Apple Inc., and then for the World Economic Forum. I’m glad for your visit today, explore the various areas with book reviews and authors interviews, the blog, and my writing, too, if there’s time.  I hope we can become friends over the lines…
