Survival Fitness, Ab Workout Ineffective? - How to Fix It

In a survival situation a certain amount of body fat might be beneficial. It would provide extra energy for your body to pull from. Too much fat would be a very big problem. With the increased work demands there is potential for heart attack and with all that fat movement would be a problem.

I have been an athlete all my life in multiple sports but I have always had a "pooch" on my lower stomach area. When I was training to play Olympic Ice Hockey I did over a thousand reps of different types of ab workouts targeting my tummy. The "pooch" still remained and I had to ask why?

I came across an article in the Huffington Post by Joe Vennare that attempts to answer this question. He says that selectively targeting one area of the body for fat loss in ineffective because your body will burn fat from all over no matter what area you target. If you try to just pump your abs it might be burning fat off your thighs instead.

So what can be done? He says you need to target the whole body with a balanced regiment of strength training, cardio training, and good nutrition.

While strength training you should be using compound movements. He gives the examples of barbell squats and dead lifts. These exercises target multiple muscles at once. He also says that you should mix in cardio exercises into your strength training, like sprints and sled pushes.

When doing your cardio exercises he uses Ben Greenfield's reference and indicates that you should be doing "long slow sessions on an empty stomach and high intensity cardio vascular intervals." He suggests doing it on an empty stomach because the body will tap into fat reserves rather than using calories you just put in your body. Also he advices that periods of all out effort with a brief recovery period blasts fat and increases your metabolism. This allows the body to continue the fat burning for up to a 24 hour period.

Of course nutrition is also important. Joe suggests a diet that is high in protein. This diet should also include fresh vegetables, fruit, and a healthy fat source like almonds and avocadoe.

Thanks to Joe Vennare for bringing this information to light. You can find his full article at www.huffingtonpost.com.

Mind Blowing Ebola News: The U.S. Government Patented Ebola in 2010

Seems like the main stream media hasn't been talking about Ebola very much lately. Did it just disappear? Oh, no the situation worsens everyday but we don't hear that much about it anymore, why? This disease is a major threat to the world, yet it is being treated like a third world problem that we don't need to worry about, why?

Trying to find some answers, I stumbled across this article by Mike Adams at www.naturalnews.com:

It's all scripted! Ebola outbreak and impossibly rapid vaccine response clearly scripted; U.S. govt. patented Ebola in 2010 and now owns all victims' blood

Thinking that this gentleman must be extremely off base, I read on. Turns out that the company who miraculously developed a miracle vaccine over night, GlaxoSmithKline, that is somehow ready for human trial is the same company that has been charged for massive criminal bribery schemes in the US and China. They were actively paying doctors to push dangerous drugs onto patients (no wonder I don't trust the medical industry.)

As their well scripted scenario plays out they will be left looking like the heroes while companies like Monsanto (who supply essential elements to the vaccine) reap billions of dollars in profits from human suffering.

The biggest mind blowing factor of this whole issue is the government owns the patent on Ebola! It's patent number is CA2741523A1. The US government owns all variants of the disease. This gives them the right to restrict all non-vaccine Ebola treatments and research! The US government has legal right to all strains circulating in all human bodies that are infected with this disease and any carrier becomes government property! In fact, just by being infected you are breaking federal law for providing a host environment that copies and distributes government property! Really??

The worst part is (if you can believe it gets worse), Ebola is a genetically modified organism that has been released as a biological weapon. It has been proven that the US government and it's pharmecutical companies have set up camps in Africa to exploit the people there and use them as human test subject with various diseases and vaccinations, just like Ebola.

You simply must read Mike's article at www.naturalnews.com. The world should be absolutely outraged about this and as Americans it is our duty to control our government's activities and the rights to our freedom. I don't want to become government property just because I get a disease or ever for that matter. People must be made aware of what we are allowing to happen under the flag of the United States!

Let's Get Going! (a sneak peek the writing of The Changing Earth Series)

As the stresses of life pile up and the mountains we climb seems impossible to navigate, sometimes these words of inspiration are more welcome than we know.

I am working diligently on my second book in The Changing Earth Series. Writing it is so much different than the first. I have come so far in my knowledge of survival material, environmental studies and writing technique but I still find myself questioning my abilities. Am I including enough action? Are my characters developed enough? Will people be able to get quality survival knowledge from it? Will I emotionally capture you with the intense love shared between husband, wife and family?

When I write, I often say it feels like an inner being takes over and the story just writes itself. I can look back at the story in wonder that I was the one who produced it. Guess I will have to trust in that inner guide to take me over and produce another great piece of work to capture your minds!

California Fire!

This year has been a horrible year for California and its wildfires. The firefighters haven't had a moments rest with the fires burning out of control across the state. The latest one actually hits close to home for me and is destroying a lot of the wilderness I used as landscape in my book Day After Disaster. For a shocking video of a much loved mountain lake losing its vegetation visit: https://www.facebook.com/Author.S.Hathaway. We are having so many fires this year in California because we have no water. Everything is dry as a bone and ready to light up at a moment's notice. Also, the fact that wild fires are suppressed doesn't help either.

That's right our constant suppression of every little fire is not helping in the long run. The National Autubon Society states in its Field Guide to California that fires play a vital role to California's ecosystem. They clean out all of the dead plant matter littering the forest floor and add essential nutrients to the soil. It goes on to say that there are many California native plants, like the Manzanita, Mariposa lily and fire poppies, that actually depend on fire to reproduce. These plants have natural fire helpers like flammable oils and natural defenses like fire retardant root balls.

Fires in California have always burned. They used to be set by lightening. Then the native American used controlled burns to burn out the undergrowth to make hunting easier.

Now-a-days every fire is suppressed with extreme focus and nothing is allowed to burn. This makes fires a lot less frequent but when they happen they are much more intense, much like the one that is burning in El Dorado County and has now engulfed over 70,000 acres of wilderness. These super intense fires destroy the natural defenses that plants have developed and leave the ecosystem stripped of life.

For the good of California we need to find a balance. A system of burning so these super intense fires don't happen.

Day After Disaster, Ready For the Big Shakedown?

In the past three hundred and fourteen years there have been about eighty earthquakes in the United States that have registered over a 3.8 magnitude. These quakes don’t just happen in California. They have been recorded in Alaska, Wyoming, Maine, Oklahoma, Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, Alabama, Florida, Pennsylvania, Washington, Texas, Oregon, Hawaii, Wisconsin, Nevada, South Carolina, Kansas, Missouri, Massachusetts, and others. Clearly, no one is immune.

Cascadia Earthquake

From Flickr: Paul Wilkinson License
Over the past history of the United States we have had some big quakes. One of the most ancient earthquakes that we know happened in the United States is the Cascadia Earthquake of 1700.  There were not written records back then but we know it happened because of Japanese tsunami records, Native American lore, and Dendrochronology or the study of tree wrings. The scientist have found that there was a large population of red cedar trees that died because the coastal forest that they called home was lowered into the tidal zone where they could not sustain life. The rings have also shown that one of these “great quakes” happens in the Cascadia Subduction Zone about every five hundred years. Currently we are at year three hundred and fourteen. With our modern technology many coastal cities in this zone are aware of the tsunami danger and earthquake danger and have prepared well. The major threat turns to the inland cities of Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, Victoria and Tacoma that have not been build to sustain an earthquake of this magnitude and have many vulnerable buildings and bridges.

The New Madrid Earthquake

From Flickr: Towne Post Network License
The New Madrid Earthquake was a massive quake on the east coast of the United States. The quake that started out the series of events happened on December 16th of 1811. This initial shaking was felt over fifty thousand square miles away (130,000 sq km). There were four main quakes. The first of which took place in Arkansas. The following three happened in Missouri. The destruction involved the ground being grossly contorted, fissures splaying the landscape, stream banks caving in and areas being flooded. The last quake absolutely demolished the town of New Madrid, did severe damage to St. Louis, and reversed the flow of the Mississippi River for a time. Luckily the area was much more sparsely populated than it is today. In 2008 the Federal Emergency Management Agency looked into the effect that an event of this magnitude would have on the much more populated region of today. They concluded that a similar event would cause severe damage to the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee, resulting in the highest economic loss due to natural disaster ever. Building codes in these states were not designed to withstand earthquakes. The loss of property and life would be devastating.

1906 San Francisco Earthquake

Probably the most famous earthquake of all that happened in the United States was the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. Over three thousand people died in the event, mostly due to the catastrophic fires that ensued after the quake. Fifty five percent of the people in the ninth largest city in the United States were left homeless. Eighty percent of largest city on the West Coast at the time and the center of financial, cultural and trade activities was demolished. The economic results of this event were an overwhelming four hundred million in 1906 or eight point two billion today. Geologists found the culprit of the disaster, the San Andreas Fault. Architects designed “earthquake proof” structures for the city. San Francisco has tried to prepare for the inevitable next time.

Earthquakes in Day After Disaster

There have been many more earthquakes over the history of the United States and the world. They accompany most other types of natural disasters as well. If a volcano erupts, there are earthquakes. If you build a reservoir, there are earthquakes. If the earth plates shift, there are earthquakes. The list goes on and on.

In the novel Day After Disaster the main antagonistic natural disaster was a series of earthquakes for that reason, they accompany most other disasters. The book was written on more of a micro-view of a mega disaster. You see the event as it is unfolding from the point of view of one character trying to survive the event. The character does not know what happened in the big picture of the world to cause these quakes. All she knows is they are happening and she must survive and find out if her family is still alive. In the novel, the characters are not receiving any kind of assistance from the outside world, which tips them off that the problem must be very widespread. The true cause of the earthquakes will be revealed in the sequel to the novel and the next book in The Changing Earth Series.

Current Earthquake Activity
All this discussion about mega-earthquakes might cause you to wonder if there is an increase in activity lately. The media seems to always have a story on an earthquake occurring somewhere in the world. Ricard Mankiewicz examines this question in his http://www.Science20.com blog post why so many earthquakes this decade. He found that the reason people think there is an increase going on is because they are receiving more media information on occurrences. Scientifically, there is no evidence that there is an increase over the past decade and the quakes worldwide are fairly consistent. One interesting place to check out to see if an earthquake is calculated to happen near you anytime soon is http://www.world-earthquakes.com/. They use a mathematical algorithm to predict the future earthquakes that will happen world wide between now and 2042. They have made many correct predictions so it is worth taking a look at.
